View the proposal

The idea

Rare Signal Co is proposing a curated showcase introducing Toronto to emerging independent music from Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads.

Why NXNE

This idea came from attending NXNE and seeing how the festival introduces whole scenes to Toronto in one coherent move. Regional and international delegations arrive as a package, not a pile of separate acts.

Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads can do the same thing. This isn't a marketing stunt built around a festival. It's a proposal from someone who has actually been in the room and seen the model work.

Amplification beyond the room

Revolt / Off Script Worldwide

All six artists are signed to distribution deals with Revolt / Off Script Worldwide. That relationship opens the door to additional promotion across Revolt's social channels and the possibility of extra budget or deeper participation in the event itself.

For NXNE, that means the showcase comes with a distribution partner that already has a reason to amplify it.

Promotion / media

Why the 757

A region with a history of changing the sound

Virginia's 757, meaning Virginia Beach and the greater Hampton Roads region, has an influence on modern American music that is bigger than its size. That runs from jazz and early R&B through the hip-hop, R&B and pop records that ended up shaping the mainstream.

It was never only a birthplace. Teddy Riley relocated his operation to Virginia Beach, built his studio there, and helped discover Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. That is an ecosystem. That did not happen by accident.

Roots

Ella Fitzgerald · Ruth Brown · Pearl Bailey

The sound changers

Missy Elliott · Timbaland · Pharrell · Chad Hugo / The Neptunes · Clipse

Behind the boards

Bink! · Nottz · Danja · Lex Luger

The continuum

Masego · DRAM · Bruce Hornsby

757 → Toronto isn't a retrospective. It asks a different question: who is coming next?

The next signal

Shaolinn · Gee Litt · Shann · Qui · CMRNPRKR · Brooklynn

We're not asking NXNE to showcase a management company. We're asking NXNE to showcase a region, and the independent artists carrying its sound forward across alternative R&B, soul, hip-hop and indie rock.

Flexible programming

Full showcase
